Toward Criteria-Based Automatic Group Formation in MOOCs

چکیده
Effective use of Collaborative Learning in MOOC contexts faces many challenges. One of them regards the possibility to create groups according to a set of criteria, which is not currentlly supported by MOOC platforms. This paper presents our work in progress on this problem. We introduce the design and initial results of an experiment where groups based on homogeneous levels of activity, as creation criteria, are compared with randomly created control groups. The preliminary results provide initial evidence about the feasibility and eventual advantages of using criteria-based group formation in MOOCs.

LEARNING GROUP FORMATION FOR MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSES (MOOCs)
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) describe platforms where users with completely different backgrounds subscribe to various courses on offer. MOOC forums and discussion boards offer learners a medium to communicate with each other and maximize their learning outcomes. However, oftentimes learners are hesitant to approach each other for different reasons (being shy, don’t know the right match,...

متن کاملAutomatic tuning of a behavior-based guidance algorithm for formation flight of quadrotors
This paper presents a tuned behavior-based guidance algorithm for formation flight of quadrotors. The behavior-based approach provides the basis for the simultaneous realization of different behaviors such as leader following and obstacle avoidance for a group of agents; in our case they are quadcopters. In this paper optimization techniques are utilized to tune the parameters of a behavior-bas...
متن کاملDynamic Re-Composition of Learning Groups Using PSO-Based Algorithms
In collaborative learning contexts, the problem of automatically forming effective learning groups gets considerably complex with larger class sizes, e.g. in MOOCs. Additionally, group dynamics caused by high dropout rates currently observable on online open course platforms poses challenges to learning group formation strategies. To address these problems, this paper presents PSO-based algorit...
متن کاملBeyond Prediction: First Steps Toward Automatic Intervention in MOOC Student Stopout
High attrition rates in massive open online courses (MOOCs) have motivated growing interest in the automatic detection of student “stopout”. Stopout classifiers can be used to orchestrate an intervention before students quit, and to survey students dynamically about why they ceased participation. In this paper we expand on existing stop-out detection research by (1) exploring important elements...
